Enough signatures on my petition forms gets John W. Tilford on the fall ballot as an independent candidate for the United States House of Representatives, Indiana 9th District.
0900 AM on Thursday, 4 June 2020 I will start from in front of our northernmost former home in the 9th District located 1 and 1/8 mile south of Wilbur, Indiana (The Wilbur store is on the southeast corner of the intersection of Wilbur Rd and Hwy 142, about seven miles north of Martinsville in Morgan County) to walk to our southernmost former home in the 9th in Georgetown (on Hwy 64 northwest of New Albany in Floyd County). Polly and I have lived in seven homes in the 9th District. Contrast with the incumbent, Trey Hollingsworth.

I will post selfies, pictures of landmarks, and comments during the march on the campaign Facebook page “Tilford for U.S. Congress, Indiana 9th.” Reporters and supporters are welcome to join me en route. Mobile interviews would be appreciated and help the miles go by. After the march I will post regular status reports on the number of signatures received toward the 5,368 required. I will gladly answer campaign questions on (812) 671-3165 before, during, and after the march.
I was not involved in the partisan primaries as an independent. I can only get on the fall ballot by submitting petitions with 5,368 signatures of 9th District registered voters. How to print, complete, and submit a petition form is – appropriately enough – on the “How?” page. I need to receive the signed petition forms by mid-June in order to complete additional information for each form, hand-carry to the respective counties to verify the names against their registered voter rolls, and get the forms to the Indiana State Election Commission by 30 June.
While the primary deadlines and dates were changed in light of coronavirus hazards, the 30 June deadline for an independent remains the same. Time is critical. I need publicity, and will march from Wilbur, north of Martinsville, to Georgetown, northwest of New Albany, to get it.
A march to take back Congress for the people. A march not for money but for signatures. Can any of us say we are satisfied with the current Congress? The people have the power to blaze another path, a non-partisan and non-big money path, which they or their children might follow. A way to give genuinely representative candidates a chance. Someone must break through.
Please help this service connected disabled, Vietnam and Global War on Terrorism veteran who wants to save our democratic republic. My first job began at age 18 on the yellow footprints at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. I retired from the military at age 60 as a full Colonel, Deputy Commander, National Ground Intelligence Center. I’m a life member of VFW and DAV and regular member of American Legion, but the charters of military service organizations prevent their publicizing candidates. If you are a veteran or know a veteran, please pass the word.
“We, The People” have the power to change the way Congressional seats are filled. But the people need to know and act for it to happen.
Well, I didn’t make it. Gave up around 5 PM when Mother Nature told me in no uncertain terms, “You’re stupid. Stop.” I was with a few Frizbee throws of Dolan, Indiana. Maybe 30 miles out from the start near Wilbur, Indiana. Darned near a heat casualty. Was drinking water but sweating it out so fast I must have been, as the medical people say, depleting my electrolytes. Feet were blistered, one bleeding a little through the sock. Lyft couldn’t find a driver to get me from the shady spot where I’d stopped. Finally called Polly. By that time I was breathing OK and could stand up and move around a little.
Another learning point: the big blister which was bleeding is located right under a lump of scar tissue from a surgery I now think was a certain podiatrist’s way to make more money. Turns out wearing wider shoes fixed the original problem. Get second opinions.
I regret letting you down, myself down, but most of all the objective down. I don’t see any way I can get the signatures needed in the next couple of weeks to get on the fall ballot.
